Purpose of Job
The Socio-Economic Officer will give technical expertise on Africa’s key issues like:
- Health
- Education
- Employment
- Human Mobility
- Migration
- Diaspora
The officer will also support the AU–EU partnership and the new OACPS–EU Cooperation Agreement, making sure Africa’s priorities are heard and respected.
Main Functions
The Socio-Economic Officer will:
- Follow up activities of the AU Mission and monitor progress.
- Suggest new research ideas and collect/analyze data.
- Help prepare reports, budgets, and work programmes.
- Organize meetings, conferences, and seminars.
- Coordinate with AU departments to ensure teamwork.
Specific Responsibilities
Socio-Economic Analysis
- Analyse trends in poverty, health, education, employment, and youth.
- Draft papers and reports on socio-economic development.
- Support AU–EU coordination meetings (Steering Committees, Ministerial).
- Plan and service meetings with African Ambassadors in Brussels (GAAB).
- Represent AU in OACPS meetings and promote AU’s decisions.
Migration and Human Mobility Dialogue
- Follow up AU–EU Migration and Mobility Dialogue.
- Ensure alignment with AU Migration Policy Framework (MPFA).
- Support AU–EU–UN cooperation on migration.
- Act as focal point for meetings with Belgian Immigration Office.
African Diaspora and Civil Society Support
- Coordinate regular meetings with African diaspora and CSOs in Europe.
- Promote AU’s Decade of African Roots and Diasporas.
- Keep and update a database of African diaspora in Europe.
- Showcase diaspora entrepreneurship.
- Act as focal point for Africa Day activities.
Academic Requirements and Relevant Experience
You must have:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Social Sciences, Development Economics, Law, Humanities, or related fields + years of relevant experience. OR
- Master’s Degree in same fields + fewer years of relevant experience.
Experience in working with international organizations, governments, or civil society will help you stand out.

Tenure of Appointment
- Regular contract for 3 years.
- First 12 months = probation period.
- After probation, renewable for 2 years (based on performance).

Languages
- You must be proficient in one AU working language.
- Knowledge of another AU language is an advantage.
Remuneration
- Basic Salary: US$ 37,453.00 per year (P2 Step 1).
- Post Adjustment: extra percentage of basic salary.
- Housing Allowance: about US$ 16,819 per year.
- Education Allowance: up to 75% of tuition (US$ 7,800 max per child for international staff).
