 When Hearts Whispers

Episode 2: The Secret in Her Sketchbook

The sun rose slowly over Nyamugari, painting the lake in soft golden colors. Kevin woke up early, even before the birds began to sing. He didn’t know why, but something inside him pulled him out of bed, like a gentle voice calling him to go.

He washed his face quickly, grabbed a light sweater, and walked quietly out of the house. His mother was still asleep, and the small shop hadn’t opened yet. As he walked through the empty paths of Nyamugari, he kept thinking about Aline; her soft voice, her gentle smile, and the quiet magic she brought with her.

When he reached the lake, he found her sitting under the big tree where he usually read his books. She was barefoot again, her toes touching the grass, and she was drawing something in a small sketchbook.

Aline looked up and smiled as if she had been waiting.

“You’re early,” Kevin said with a shy grin.

“So are you,” she replied, closing her sketchbook quickly.

Kevin sat beside her, the morning breeze playing with the leaves above them. “What were you drawing?”

“Just… the lake,” she said, a little nervously.

“Can I see?”

Aline hesitated. “It’s not finished.”

“I don’t mind,” Kevin said softly.

Slowly, Aline opened her sketchbook. The pages were filled with delicate pencil drawings flowers, birds, trees, and the lake from different angles. But the last page made Kevin stop. It was a sketch of a boy sitting under the big tree, holding a book. His head was turned slightly, and the lake shined behind him.

“That’s me,” Kevin whispered.

Aline looked down. “I drew it last night… from memory.”

Kevin didn’t speak. He just stared at the drawing, feeling something warm grow inside his chest. No one had ever drawn him before. No one had ever seen him that way.

“You’re very talented,” he said.

“Thank you,” she replied quietly.

There was a silence, but it wasn’t heavy. It felt soft, like a hug without words.

“Why did you come to Nyamugari?” Kevin asked gently.

“My parents separated,” Aline said, her voice calm but low. “I needed a new place. A quieter one. So, my aunt offered to take me in.”

Kevin nodded. “I’m glad you came.”

Aline smiled again. “Me too.”

They sat there for a long time. This time, they talked more about books, about music, about their dreams. Kevin told her he wanted to write a book someday, a story about simple things that touch the heart. Aline told him she wanted to create a picture book full of poems and sketches.

It was strange. They had just met, but it felt like they had known each other for years.

Before they left, Kevin looked at her and said, “Can we meet here again tomorrow?”

Aline looked at him, eyes shining. “Yes. I’d like that.”

And so, two hearts continued to whisper, page by page, sketch by sketch, in a town where love came slowly by the lake, under the tree, in the silence.
