    Episode Summary

The morning after Aline’s triumph at the Kigali Art Review is filled with mixed emotions. While joy shines in their hearts, Kevin and Aline soon realize that success has awakened jealousy. In the lively streets of Nyamirambo, whispers of danger follow them. Emmanuel reappears with unexpected wisdom, Uncle Patrice warns of pride and envy, and Aline’s prayers guide them toward courage. Shadows grow thicker, but so does their love.

    Morning after the Applause

The sun climbed gently over Kigali’s green hills. From the hostel’s small window, Kevin saw the world waking: boda-boda riders shouting “Nyabugogo! Remera!”; children in blue uniforms laughing, their satchels swinging; women carrying baskets of bananas on their heads. The city was alive, yet Kevin’s heart carried the weight of last night’s message: This is not over.

Aline sat on the bed, sketchbook pressed to her chest. The same sketchbook that had carried her dreams into the world yesterday now felt like a shield.

“Kevin,” she said softly, “yesterday the clapping was loud, but today the silence feels louder.”

Kevin sat beside her. “Fear is only smoke. It looks strong but fades. What you showed yesterday was fire — real fire. Smoke cannot defeat fire.”

She smiled faintly. “Your words give me courage. But still, my heart trembles.”

    Uncle Patrice’s Warning

At breakfast, Uncle Patrice poured tea into small enamel cups. He looked at Kevin and Aline with the eyes of a village elder who had seen many storms.

“My children,” he began, “in Rwanda we say, ‘Iyo inkoko itangiye kubika, inkona itangira kuzenguruka’ — when a hen starts to crow, the hawk begins to circle. Yesterday, Aline, you crowed. The world saw your light. But light also calls shadows.”

Kevin tightened his jaw. “Uncle, I will protect her.”

Patrice leaned forward, his voice sharp but kind. “Protect not only with fists, my son, but with wisdom. Love without wisdom is like rain without clouds. It falls for a moment, but it does not last.”

Aline reached for his hand. “Uncle, pray for us. Pray that courage and love stay in our path.”

Patrice closed his eyes and whispered, “Mana turinde mu kuri n’urukundo. God, protect them in truth and love.”

    Stroll through Nyamirambo

Later that day, Kevin and Aline walked through Nyamirambo. The air was alive with scents of roasted maize, spicy brochettes sizzling on charcoal, and the faint sweetness of pineapples stacked on wooden stalls. Radios played Diamond Platnumz and Afrobeat rhythms that made children dance on the sidewalks.

For a brief moment, Kevin forgot the shadows. He teased Aline, “You walk like a queen today. Look at people turning their heads.”

She giggled. “And you walk like a farmer who lost his cow in the city.”

They laughed, their joy floating like bubbles in the busy street. But the laughter died when Kevin noticed two men leaning against a wall, their eyes sharp, following every step. When he looked again, they were gone.

At the market, among piles of tomatoes and cassava, a stranger brushed against him and slipped a folded paper into his pocket. Kevin’s hand froze as he unfolded it.

If she shines again tomorrow, she will fall. Choose wisely.

He crushed the paper in his fist. His throat was dry. He did not tell Aline yet. Instead, he whispered, “Stay close. The city has eyes today.”

    Emmanuel’s Visit

Evening painted Kigali with orange skies. The hostel room was dim, a small candle flickering. Suddenly, there was a knock at the door.

It was Emmanuel, the teacher they once feared. His clothes were worn, but his posture was firm.

“I know what you saw today,” Emmanuel said, stepping in. “The shadows are real.”

Kevin’s face tightened. “Why are you here?”

Emmanuel lowered his voice. “Because I walked this path once. I loved a girl, but jealousy and anger destroyed us. I let lies control me. I will not watch you make the same mistake.”

Kevin’s fists clenched. “How do we fight them?”

“Not with fists,” Emmanuel replied calmly. “Jealous men feed on anger. If you fight with anger, you feed their fire. But if you answer with truth and courage, their fire will die.”

Aline’s eyes softened. “Maybe God sent you here, Emmanuel. Sometimes even enemies can turn into guardians.”

Emmanuel looked at her with respect. “Hold on to this love. It is rare. Do not waste it.”

    Aline’s Silent Prayer

Later that night, Aline sat at the small wooden table. She opened her sketchbook and began to draw: a small house under rain, two figures holding hands, a great shield covering them both.

Her voice was soft, almost a whisper. “Mana turinde mu rukundo. God, protect us in love.”

Kevin watched her, then opened his diary. His words spilled slowly: Love is not safe, but it is worth everything. Tonight I choose courage. Tomorrow we face whatever comes.

Two books — one of drawings, one of words — side by side on the table. Both telling the same story.

    The Buzz of Fear

The night grew still. Raindrops tapped on the tin roof. The hostel seemed wrapped in silence. Suddenly, Kevin’s phone buzzed on the table.

He grabbed it quickly. The message glowed like fire in the dark:

Tomorrow’s review decides everything. Be ready to lose, or to fight.

Kevin’s hands shook. He looked at Aline, who had fallen asleep with her sketchbook on her lap. He whispered to himself, “We must be ready.”

Outside, thunder rumbled faintly over the hills.

    Life Lessons from This Episode

As I wrote this episode, I thought of many young people in Rwanda and Africa who rise with talent but face jealousy and doubt. The story of Kevin and Aline teaches us that love is not just a sweet feeling. It is a shield of courage, a choice to stand together even when shadows gather.

Lesson: Love becomes stronger when it is tested. Courage and trust are the true weapons against jealousy and lies.
